Tips for Preventing Myopia in Children This Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is here, and children who have irregular lifestyles, lack outdoor activities, or engage in prolonged near-work activities are more susceptible to developing myopia or experiencing a worsening of their existing condition.

Increase exposure to outdoor sunlight

Exposure to sunlight can stimulate the secretion of dopamine. It plays a crucial role in promoting eye development, preventing myopia, and boosting immunity, making it highly beneficial for the growth and development of adolescents. It is recommended that preschool children spend at least three hours outdoors in the sun every day, while primary and middle school students should aim for at least two hours daily, which can effectively reduce the risk of myopia and promote healthy eyesight.

Maintain correct reading and writing posture

To create an optimal learning environment, it is recommended that the space be quiet, well-lit, and properly ventilated. When reading, avoid placing the book in direct sunlight or reading in dim lighting. We have the "three ones" rule for students: keep the eyes approximately one foot away from the book (around 33cm), position the chest one fist's distance from the edge of the table (around 10cm), and maintain a one-inch gap between the fingers and the pen tip when writing (around 3cm).

Reduce Electronics Use

Children younger than 3 had better avoid using electronic devices. For children aged three to six, it is recommended to limit their daily screen time within one hour, with each session not exceeding 15 minutes, while ensuring a minimum of two hours of outdoor activities every day. When working or studying in close proximity to electronic screens, it is important to follow the "20-20-20" rule: take a break every 20 minutes and look at an object 20 feet (6m) away for 20 seconds, which can help alleviate symptoms of visual fatigue caused by prolonged near-work activities.

Avoid reading when traveling in public transport

It can be challenging to maintain a fixed distance between the eyes and the contents when you are traveling in public transport. The eyes need to constantly adjust to see clearly, which may lead to visual fatigue and strain.

Have enough sleep

It is recommended that primary school students aim for at least 10 hours of sleep per day, while junior high school students aim for at least 9 hours, and high school students aim for at least 8 hours. Thus the eyes receive sufficient rest and help prevent eye strain and fatigue.

Balanced diet

Eating a well-balanced diet and paying attention to nutrition is crucial for maintaining healthy eyes. Incorporating foods such as fish, fresh vegetables and fruits, and milk into your diet can provide essential nutrients that promote good eye health. It is recommended to limit the consumption of foods high in pure sugar, as well as fried or highly processed foods, which can be detrimental to eye health.
