Despite ongoing U.S. export restrictions on advanced computing chips, China has emerged as the global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) research, according to a new report from the Dimensions database by UK-based Digital Science.

Global AI research output has surged from fewer than 8,500 papers in 2000 to over 57,000 in 2024. Of these, China contributed 23,695 papers—more than the combined total from the U.S. (6,378), the UK (2,747), and the European Union (10,055).

The report highlights a shift in global influence, noting a decline in U.S. dominance and the rise of China as the central force in AI development. One standout example is Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, whose 2024 release of the V3 large language model achieved performance on par with U.S. counterparts at significantly lower cost, challenging long-held assumptions that the U.S. maintains a decade-long lead over China in AI capabilities.

China is also leading in AI patent filings. In 2024, it submitted 35,423 AI-related patent applications—far surpassing the combined 2,678 applications from the U.S., UK, Canada, Japan, and South Korea. The study also found that China’s AI research is becoming increasingly autonomous, with a lower proportion of international collaboration, even as Western countries grow more reliant on Chinese foundational research.

With approximately 30,000 AI researchers—three times more than the U.S.—and a notably younger talent pool, China is poised to enter a new wave of AI-driven innovation, further solidifying its global leadership in the field.
