The Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda last month has resulted in 63 confirmed cases and 15 deaths. Preliminary genomic evidence suggests that this outbreak originated from a pathogen jumping from animals to humans.

Further evidence indicates that the index case in this outbreak may have been infected while visiting a cave known to house bats carrying the virus.

The repeated spillover of the Marburg virus from animals to humans has raised concerns about a potentially broader spread in Rwanda than previously believed. Such spillovers also heighten the risk of future outbreaks as the virus's reservoir remains unidentified.

Researchers highlight that environmental threats like climate change and deforestation increase human encounters with potentially infectious animals. More data on how the virus persists in bat populations and in which tissues could inform surveillance efforts, aiding health officials in pinpointing viral hotspots effectively.
