The European Commission has announced that starting from 2024, USB-C will become the standard charging port for electronic devices in the EU. This move aims to establish a universal charging solution, allowing consumers to charge any brand of device using any USB-C charger. The requirement for "universal charging" will cover various handheld devices such as cell phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, portable speakers, electronic game consoles, e-readers, earbuds, keyboards, mice, and portable navigation systems. By 2026, laptops will also need to comply with these charging requirements.

In 2009, the market witnessed a proliferation of over 30 different charging interfaces. However, under the supervision of the European Commission, 14 mobile phone manufacturers, including Apple, made adjustments, resulting in a reduction to three main charging interfaces: USB Type-C, Lightning, and Micro-USB.

According to a survey conducted by the European Union in 2019, half of the chargers sold with mobile phones in 2018 were equipped with Micro-USB interfaces, 29% featured USB Type-C, and 21% utilized the Lightning interface, primarily used by Apple phones. Meanwhile, the other two interfaces were mainly used by Android phones.

In September 2021, the European Commission proposed the adoption of USB Type-C as the universal charging interface for all electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, portable speakers, and game consoles, within the EU. The transition period for manufacturers to implement this change is set at 24 months.

It is important to note that the EU's objective is not specifically targeting Apple. During the two-year transition period, all electronics manufacturers must adapt their charging interfaces to the new standard. For Apple products, apart from Apple phones that currently rely solely on the Lightning interface, all electronic product manufacturers must switch to a USB Type-C interface.

Apple representatives have voiced their opposition to this proposal, expressing concerns that such stringent charger regulations may stifle innovation rather than promote it, ultimately harming consumer interests in Europe and worldwide. However, Apple's opposition has not impeded the progress of the relevant legislation.

On October 4, 2022, the European Parliament overwhelmingly passed a bill mandating the standardization of charging interfaces for portable smart electronic devices, including mobile phones. The bill received 602 votes in favor, 13 votes against, and 8 abstentions. It dictates that all new portable smart devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, and portable navigation systems, must adopt USB Type-C charging interfaces by the end of 2024. Furthermore, USB Type-C will also become the standard interface for laptop chargers starting in 2026.

USB-C has been gaining prominence in the past few years and has become increasingly prevalent in computer, communication, and consumer electronics devices. It is evolving as the mainstream charging interface and expanding beyond traditional 3C (computer, communication, and consumer electronics) devices.

Notably, during its product launch event in September 2023, Apple announced that all iPhone 15 models would feature USB-C interfaces.
