Chinese tech giant ByteDance is strategically positioning itself in the European artificial intelligence landscape with plans to establish a cutting-edge research and development center on the continent.

According to a report by The Paper, ByteDance is actively recruiting top-tier tech experts specializing in large language models and other AI domains, signaling a significant investment in advancing AI technologies within Europe. The Beijing-headquartered company has yet to issue an official statement regarding these developments.

In a recent move highlighting its European ambitions, ByteDance appointed Xavier Niel, the esteemed founder and chairperson of French internet services provider Iliad Group, to its board. This appointment underscores ByteDance's commitment to expanding its footprint in the European market.

ByteDance initiated its Language and Graphics Models team in February of the previous year, which is dedicated to the research and development of language and graphic models.

Expanding its AI product lineup, ByteDance introduced LLM Skylark in August and swiftly followed up with the AI-powered chatbot Doubao. In a strategic pricing move in May, ByteDance unveiled the Doubao LLM family, undercutting competitors by over 99 percent, sparking a price war in the market.

With robust growth and innovation, ByteDance has emerged as a key player in the Chinese large language model sector, as evidenced by Doubao's soaring monthly active user base, surpassing 27.5 million in the first half of the year and securing the top spot in China, more than doubling the user base of the second-ranked LLM product, according to third-party data analysis.
