Zuckerberg Emphasizes the Role of AI in Meta's Future Development

Published on Oct 26, 2023

In a recent quarterly earnings conference call for the third quarter of the 2023 fiscal year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the significance of generative AI technology in transforming the way people engage with various applications. Zuckerberg expressed his belief that in the future, Meta might even utilize AI to directly generate content based on users' interests.

Zuckerberg stated that AI would assist creators using Meta's major applications in enhancing content quality and production efficiency. Over time, the proportion of user-consumed content generated by AI is expected to increase significantly.

Regarding the company's future development, Zuckerberg revealed that in 2024, AI would become Meta's largest investment area in terms of engineering and computing resources. Additionally, to avoid significantly expanding the workforce, the company plans to prioritize AI projects and redirect personnel to work on AI-related initiatives.

During the AI boom of the past two years, Meta has already released several unique open-source AI models, including the freely available Llama 2, a large language model used for research and commercial purposes. When asked about the benefits of these open-source models for the company, Zuckerberg expressed his aspiration to establish Meta as a company that "shares achievements with the industry," aiming to maintain a leading position and attract exceptional AI talent to work at Meta.

Meta's CFO, Susan Li, also announced during the conference call that after a cost-cutting "efficiency year" in 2023, the next fiscal year would primarily focus on hiring employees in four key areas: AI, monetization, metaverse, Reality Labs (Meta's real-world metaverse experiment), and regulatory compliance.

According to Meta's financial results for the third quarter of the 2023 fiscal year, ending on September 30th, the company reported a revenue of $34.146 billion, marking a 23% increase compared to the same period last year. This figure surpassed market expectations of $33.52 billion. Advertising revenue from social media platforms remained the primary component of Meta's third-quarter revenue, growing by 24% year-on-year to reach $33.643 billion, accounting for over 98.5% of total revenue.

On the other hand, Reality Labs, the department responsible for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) business, continued to experience substantial losses, reaching $3.742 billion in the third quarter, higher than last year's $3.672 billion.

During the Meta Connect developer conference held a month ago, Meta unveiled a series of generative AI products targeting consumers. Among the upcoming AI tools for Meta's major applications, Meta AI, a chatbot capable of generating text and images, was introduced. Built on the powerful Llama 2 model, it will retrieve real-time information from the web through Microsoft Bing. Additionally, users will be able to engage in text-based conversations with 28 chatbots created based on renowned personalities. Meta also launched the developer platform AI Studio, enabling enterprises and creators to build and train customized chatbots on the platform.

With Meta's continued investment and emphasis on AI, the company aims to leverage the potential of generative AI technology to enhance user experiences and shape the future of its diverse applications.
