Volkswagen Expands R&D Capacity in China with EUR2.5 Billion Investment

Published on Apr 13, 2024

German automobile giant Volkswagen Group has announced its plans to boost research and development capacity in China through a significant investment of EUR2.5 billion (USD2.7 billion). Volkswagen Group China revealed that the company will expand its production and innovation hub located in Hefei, the capital city of China's Anhui province, in order to accelerate innovation in the country. The Hefei center, where Volkswagen has already invested EUR1 billion, is the company's largest research and development facility worldwide, second only to its headquarters in Wolfsburg.

Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive of Volkswagen China, expressed the company's commitment to its "In China, for China" strategy, which prioritizes customer focus, speed, and local development. Brandstätter emphasized that the new production and development hub in Hefei will expedite the introduction of technologies to the market by approximately 30 percent in the future. The additional investment in the site demonstrates Volkswagen's ambition to enhance its local innovative strength rapidly.

In addition to expanding its research and development capacity, Volkswagen also announced its collaboration with Chinese new energy vehicle startup Xpeng Motor to produce two more models at the Hefei hub. One of the models is a mid-size sport utility vehicle, scheduled for production in 2026.

Last year, Volkswagen acquired a 5 percent stake in Xpeng for USD700 million and signed a framework agreement for strategic technical collaboration. This collaboration includes the joint development of two B-class battery EV models, specifically mid-sized sedans.

Volkswagen China noted that it plans to introduce over 30 electric models in China alone by 2030. Additionally, the Hefei hub will manufacture at least four more models for the electric entry-level segment in the compact class starting in 2026.

While Volkswagen has been China's top-selling auto brand for several years, it faces increasing competition from Chinese competitor BYD. In 2020, Volkswagen delivered slightly over 3.2 million vehicles in the Chinese market, whereas BYD achieved 3 million deliveries.
