Luxury German automotive manufacturer Porsche is strategically expanding its local research and development team in China to cater to the evolving demands of the market. Owned by the Volkswagen Group, Porsche aims to bolster its presence by focusing on the enhancement of smart cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems.

According to a recent report, a company insider emphasized the significance of the R&D team as a key priority for Porsche China, stating, "This team will play a pivotal role in adapting and developing intelligent applications tailored for the Chinese market."

The China-based R&D team, established in 2022, is undergoing significant growth, transitioning from a focus on testing and preparation for imported models to a team of nearly 50 members. Notably, the team is relocating from Shanghai's Pudong area to the Jiading district, known for housing various automotive R&D centers. Porsche is also set to establish its research laboratory in this new location, as reported by an industry source.

Despite being Porsche's largest market for the past eight years, China has witnessed a decline in Porsche's sales, dropping to 79,000 units last year and further to 43,000 units in the first three quarters of this year. This decline is attributed in part to Porsche's lag behind Chinese independent brands in smart technology integration.

Moreover, Porsche's shift towards electric vehicles has encountered challenges, with dealers noting lukewarm market reception to the all-electric Macan model. The company's endeavors in China signify a strategic response to these market dynamics, aiming to reinvigorate its position and competitiveness in the region.
