Italian Prime Minister Meloni announced on the 12th local time that the country's government is in the process of formulating an artificial intelligence regulatory law. The aim of this law is to complement the EU's ongoing approval of the Artificial Intelligence Act.
According to Italy's Ansa news agency, Meloni made this announcement during an artificial intelligence conference, where she emphasized the need to define principles and rules that align with the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act. The Italian government intends to identify effective measures to promote productivity improvements in the country through this legislation.
In addition, Meloni disclosed that Italy's national lender's venture capital arm is establishing a €1 billion artificial intelligence investment fund, aimed at supporting the growth of the industry.
Highlighting the importance of ethical development, Meloni emphasized that artificial intelligence technology can fully realize its positive potential only when developed within ethical boundaries that prioritize human rights and needs, as reported by AFP.
In December last year, the European Parliament, EU member states, and the European Commission reached a consensus on the Artificial Intelligence Bill. This legislation will prohibit certain applications of artificial intelligence technology and impose strict restrictions on high-risk use cases. The Artificial Intelligence Bill is currently awaiting approval from the European Parliament, and if passed, the relevant rules will be implemented in phases.
