BMW has announced a strategic partnership with Alibaba Group to advance artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in its China-made vehicles. The collaboration focuses on large language models (LLMs), intelligent voice interaction, and other cutting-edge innovations, with the German automaker set to integrate Alibaba's AI solutions into its next-generation models.

As part of the initiative, BMW will equip its upcoming China-produced vehicles—scheduled for mass production next year—with Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen LLM series. This integration will enhance the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, marking the first time AI-powered agents are embedded within the cockpit experience.

According to BMW, the AI technology offers human-like communication, multi-agent collaboration, precise intent recognition, and complex command interpretation, ensuring a more natural and seamless user interaction. Additionally, an active interaction recommendation system—leveraging in-car sensors and cameras—will provide personalized services, further enhancing the driving experience. The AI capabilities will be deployed across BMW's entire powertrain lineup and all vehicle models.

The adoption of an advanced electronic and electrical architecture will facilitate deeper AI integration, improving interaction dynamics and over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities, said Dai Hexuan, CEO of BMW Brilliance Automotive.

BMW's Asia-Pacific technology center has undergone a major upgrade, with its Chinese R&D team playing a pivotal role in the development process. Dr. Robert Kahlenberg, Senior Vice President of BMW R&D China, highlighted that AI-driven innovations have boosted development efficiency by 30%, helping create a cockpit experience tailored to Chinese users.

Reinforcing its commitment to AI, BMW also introduced a 360-degree full-chain AI strategy in China, focusing on digital production, user experience, and R&D innovation. The initiative aims to accelerate AI's seamless integration into all aspects of its operations in the country.

Speaking at the China Development Forum 2025, BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse emphasized the importance of global cooperation, stating that China remains a key pillar of BMW's future strategy.
