AMD announced on its official website on Tuesday (October 10) local time that it has finalized an agreement to acquire Nod.ai, an open-source artificial intelligence (AI) software company. The acquisition aims to strengthen AMD's capabilities in open-source AI.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed by AMD. However, according to capital markets data agency PitchBook, Nod.ai was recently valued at $36.5 million.

Established in 2013, Nod.ai specializes in providing optimized AI solutions to large data center operators and other customers.

In an official press release, Vamsi Boppana, the senior vice president of AMD's Artificial Intelligence Group, stated that the acquisition of Nod.ai is expected to significantly enhance AMD's ability to deliver development software to AI customers. This will enable them to easily deploy high-performance AI models specifically tailored for AMD hardware.

Boppana added that with the addition of the talented Nod.ai team, AMD's capacity to advance open-source compiler technology has been strengthened. This will facilitate the development of portable, high-performance AI solutions within AMD's product portfolio. Currently, Nod.ai's technology is widely utilized in cloud computing, edge computing, and various terminal devices.

In August of this year, AMD announced the acquisition of French AI startup Mipsology. Founded in 2015, Mipsology has been a long-term partner of AMD and has been developing AI inference and optimization solutions and tools for AMD.

AMD is making significant investments in essential software required for AI chips to catch up with its top rival, Nvidia.

Nvidia is the global leader in AI and computer graphics chips. The increasing demand for Nvidia chips, driven by the rise of generative AI exemplified by the chatbot ChatGPT, has been remarkable. A June report by Citigroup stated that as Nvidia introduces newer and more powerful AI chips, the company's market share in the AI chip industry is projected to exceed 90% in the future.
