Amazon, the U.S. e-commerce giant, announced on Thursday its significant progress in reducing plastic packaging waste in North America. The company reported that 95% of plastic bubble wrap bags have been eliminated from their packages, and they will be replaced with paper fillers made from 100% recycled materials.
This initiative marks Amazon's strongest commitment yet towards reducing plastic packaging, aiming to address the usage of nearly 15 billion plastic inflatable bags annually. Pat Lindner, Vice President of Amazon Electromechanical Engineering and Sustainable Packaging, emphasized the company's dedication to completely phasing out plastic inflatable bags in North America by the end of this year. They plan to lead by prioritizing the use of recyclable materials in their packaging, while continuing to innovate, test, and promote sustainable solutions.
Amazon began the gradual elimination of plastic filling in October 2023 when they announced the removal of plastic packaging from packages at their first automated distribution center in the United States. The company has been working closely with suppliers to adopt alternatives such as paper fillers made from recyclable materials.
This latest effort is not the first time Amazon has taken proactive measures to reduce packaging waste. In 2015, the company introduced the "Original Packaging Transport and Transportation" program, aiming to minimize the use of Amazon's iconic brown shipping boxes by transporting products using their original packaging.
With these ongoing initiatives, Amazon continues to make strides towards a more sustainable approach to packaging, reducing plastic waste, and promoting environmentally friendly practices in the e-commerce industry.
