Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding is breaking new ground by allowing artificial intelligence (AI) models to compete in its annual mathematics competition. The move aims to promote the application of AI in the frontier of mathematics.

In this year's Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition, both human contestants and AI models will vie for a total prize money of CNY4 million (approximately USD556,200). The qualifying rounds will be conducted online on April 13 and 14, with the finals scheduled for June 22, as announced by Alibaba's research institute, Damo Academy.

While AI models have impressive capabilities in natural language and video generation, they still struggle with solving complex mathematical problems and lack creative potential, according to Damo Academy. In contrast, humans possess superior flexible thinking and abstract reasoning skills.

The AI models will be evaluated based on their understanding of the questions, the accuracy of their logical reasoning, and their problem-solving ability. To ensure that the competition is truly driven by a machine, developers must submit their codes to the organizer for verification prior to the start of the competition.

The developer of the highest-scoring AI model will receive a prize of USD10,000, as stated by the Hangzhou-based academy. The second and third-place developers will be awarded USD5,000 and USD2,000, respectively.

In the human category, mathematicians who secure the gold medals will receive USD30,000 in prize money. The winners of the silver and bronze medals will be awarded USD15,000 and USD8,000, respectively. Additionally, outstanding contestants who narrowly miss out on the medals will receive a bonus of USD2,000.

Since its inception five years ago, the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition, jointly organized by the China Association for Science and Technology, Alibaba Foundation, and Damo Academy, has attracted 250,000 participants from over 70 countries and regions.
