A recent study has found that food Contact Chemicals (FCCs) are widely present in the human body, with scientists detecting 3601 different chemicals used in food packaging and related products. The study also highlights significant gaps in the availability of biological monitoring and toxicity data.

Published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, the research delves into the phenomenon of widespread human exposure to "food contact chemicals." It identifies chemicals related to food packaging and other materials that come into contact with food, detected in human samples including urine, blood, and breast milk.

Using a systematic research approach, the authors compared over 14,000 known FCCs with data from five human biomonitoring projects, three metabolism/exposure group databases, and scientific literature. The results indicate that the 3601 chemicals detected in the human body represent 25% of the total known FCCs.

Furthermore, the study points out that the potential hazards of many chemicals have not been thoroughly researched. While food packaging is not the sole source of exposure, the data from this study enhance understanding of how food contact materials contribute to human exposure. Given that only a small fraction of FCCs have been extensively studied, the actual number of such chemicals present in the human body could be much higher than currently detected.
