An internal memo obtained by Tubefilter reveals that Google's YouTube division has initiated a series of internal changes aimed at optimizing its operations. YouTube's chief business officer, Mary Ellen Coe, announced in a memo that the restructuring will involve a reduction of approximately 100 positions. However, the affected employees will have the opportunity to apply for other open positions within the department, ensuring a fair transition.
Coe emphasized that these changes are necessary to simplify the department's structure and effectively manage the increasing number of content creators on the platform. The restructuring also aims to facilitate the development of new features, including AI content tools, which will enhance the overall user experience on YouTube.
As part of the streamlining process, YouTube plans to consolidate its content creator management team, with one leader per country and region. Furthermore, the music teams will be unified on a global scale, and the sports, media, film, and TV teams will also be consolidated under a single organization. Notable projects such as YouTubeTV and NFL Sunday Ticket will fall under this unified structure, fostering collaboration and efficiency.
These changes come in the wake of recent layoffs within Google. Over the past weeks, Google has carried out workforce reductions in various departments, including the devices and services division, primarily focusing on the AR department, the Google Assistant department, and the core engineering department. Yesterday, the advertising sales team also experienced significant layoffs. It remains uncertain whether other divisions within Google are also preparing for similar workforce adjustments.
