Microsoft has recently made an announcement regarding the future of Windows 10. As of October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will cease to receive updates and support from Microsoft. This means that users of Windows 10 have approximately two years to upgrade their hardware and transition to Windows 11, the latest version of the operating system.
According to Statcounter's data as of October 2023, Windows 11 has been installed on approximately 23% of PCs worldwide, while Windows 10 still maintains a dominant market share of 71%. This substantial difference is noteworthy, especially considering that Microsoft intends to discontinue support for Windows 10 within the next two years.
Currently, Windows 10 holds the title of the most popular version of Windows among desktop computer users, with a market share of approximately 70.88%. Windows 11 follows as the second most popular version, holding a market share of 24.89%. Windows 7 still holds a market share of about 2.9%, while Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 have market shares of approximately 0.57% and 0.34% respectively. Windows XP's market share remains at around 0.3%.

The Steam hardware survey further supports the notion that Windows 10 surpasses Windows 11 in popularity, but there is a gradual transition occurring. Among Steam users who employ Windows as their operating system, Windows 10 retains the highest market share at 57.97%. Windows 11 follows closely with a usage rate of 37.43%. Windows 7 (64-bit) holds a share of 1.23%, while Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 (non-64-bit) have shares of 0.18% and 0.06% respectively.
What can users expect for PCs running on Windows 10 in 2025 and beyond? They will still be able to continue using this operating system, just as users have been able to with Windows 7. Additionally, certain third-party companies have pledged to provide ongoing support for Windows 10, similar to their commitment to Windows 7.
It is important to note that Microsoft has confirmed that eligible Windows 10 PCs can upgrade to Windows 11 for free, and this free upgrade offer will be available until 2025.
