The Tesla Gigafactory in Brandenburg, Germany, situated near Berlin in the Grinheide district, is facing opposition from local residents as it seeks to expand its operations. Currently, the Gigafactory produces Model Y electric vehicles, but Tesla had always intended a significant expansion. However, the project has encountered resistance from some local residents and environmental groups since its inception, primarily due to concerns about water supplies and deforestation resulting from the expansion.
Recently, the local government conducted a vote to gauge the support of Greenhead residents for the expansion plan. With a turnout of 70%, the results were unfavorable for Tesla, as reported by German media outlet Spiegel. Out of the total votes cast, 3,499 residents opposed the expansion, while 1,882 were in favor.
Although the vote does not possess legal binding, it could impact Tesla's expansion plans since the company would require land acquisition from local governments to proceed with the project. The vote specifically focused on Tesla's proposed logistics area, encompassing 170 hectares, with more than 100 hectares consisting of forested land that would need to be cleared.
Tesla's expansion endeavors in Germany have encountered various obstacles and resistance. However, the company has previously adjusted its plans to address concerns regarding water usage. The outcome of this vote indicates that Tesla would benefit from further efforts to foster better relationships with Greenhead residents and gain their support.
