In a groundbreaking global study involving over 215,000 students, researchers at the University of South Australia have found that while standardized tests primarily measure academic skills, various dimensions of student wellbeing—such as emotional wellbeing, engagement, and learning readiness—play a critical role in academic performance.

The study highlights that learning readiness—which encompasses key skills such as perseverance, confidence, and active participation—is not only a desirable outcome but also a catalyst for academic success. Researchers emphasized the complex relationship between wellbeing and academic achievement, noting that learning readiness has a particularly significant impact under exam conditions. Importantly, learning readiness extends beyond academic preparation to include the ability to stay focused, overcome challenges, and maintain self-belief.

Drawing on data from the South Australian Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC), the study assessed the wellbeing and engagement of students in Grades 4 to 10, alongside their academic performance on national standardized assessments (NAPLAN) and Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) between 2016 and 2019. Findings suggest that schools must adopt a more holistic educational approach—one that integrates both student wellbeing and academic achievement as core components of learning.

The researchers stress that when students are psychologically and emotionally well, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and perform better academically. However, the relationship is not strictly linear; low academic performance does not necessarily indicate low wellbeing, nor does high achievement guarantee high wellbeing. As such, schools are encouraged to look beyond test scores and implement more personalized and comprehensive strategies to support students' confidence, resilience, and readiness to learn.
