American scientists have made a significant breakthrough in the field of speech technology by developing a flexible patch that utilizes machine learning to convert throat muscle movements into speech. This innovative device shows promising potential in assisting patients with voice disorders to communicate effectively. The research findings were recently published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.

Speaking plays a vital role in human interaction, but individuals with vocal cord dysfunction often face challenges in this area. Voice disorders affect approximately 30% of the general population at some point in their lives. However, existing solutions, such as handheld electronic laryngeal devices or invasive surgeries, are inconvenient, uncomfortable, or invasive. As a result, there is an urgent need for the development of a wearable, non-invasive medical device that can effectively aid patients in communication.

Addressing this need, a team of researchers at UCLA has designed a flexible magnetoelastic patch that adheres to the larynx and mimics the shape changes of the laryngeal muscles involved in speech, even in the absence of functioning vocal cords. The patch detects specific muscle movements, generating self-sustaining electricity within the device. These movements are then translated into electrical signals and processed by a machine learning algorithm that has been trained to recognize words and convert them into audible speech signals.

To assess the effectiveness of the patch, the researchers conducted tests on eight individuals without voice disorders. These participants were asked to speak and whisper various words and phrases, such as "Merry Christmas" or "I love you," while engaging in different activities such as standing, walking, and running. The device demonstrated an impressive accuracy rate of approximately 95% in converting the muscle movements into intelligible speech.

With further testing in patients with voice disorders, this remarkable device holds great promise to provide a practical and life-changing solution for individuals struggling with voice disorders. It has the potential to significantly improve their overall quality of life and enhance their ability to communicate effectively.
