What is LEDoS?

LEDoS (LED on Silicon) is a type of microLED display that can achieve high brightness, low power consumption, and long lifespan. LEDoS displays could enable next-gen AR headsets in the coming years and offer all the qualities of OLED with fewer of its limitations.

Challenges

The main challenge of LEDoS technology is to reduce the size of the LED chips to less than 10 micrometers or even 5 micrometers while maintaining their characteristics. Samsung Display is working on this challenge and expects to introduce LEDoS displays in the near future.

Advantages

LEDoS displays are expected to replace OLED displays in AR devices because they have several advantages. First, LEDoS displays can achieve higher brightness than OLED displays, which is important for AR devices to project virtual images onto the real world. Second, LEDoS displays have lower power consumption than OLED displays, which can extend the battery life of AR devices. Third, LEDoS displays have longer lifespan than OLED displays, which can reduce the risk of burn-in and degradation.

Competitors

Samsung Display is not the only company working on LEDoS technology. Apple, Facebook, and Sony are also developing their own versions of microLED displays for AR devices. However, Samsung Display has a strong track record in display technology and has invested heavily in research and development. So Samsung Display is likely to be one of the leaders in the LEDoS market for AR devices.
