Netflix, the streaming giant that originated as a DVD rental service, has recently announced the discontinuation of its DVD business on September 29, 2023. The company has stated that it will ship its final disc on that date and will not charge customers for any unreturned discs. Additionally, customers will have the option to download a PDF copy of their rental history, ratings, and reviews from the Netflix website.
The DVD business, operating under the domain DVD.com, was initially launched in 1998 and reached its peak in 2010 with an impressive subscriber count of over 20 million. However, with the increasing popularity and convenience of streaming services, the DVD business experienced a steady decline and as of 2021, it had only around 2 million subscribers.
Netflix has confirmed that it will delete most personal information associated with DVD subscriptions by January 1, 2024. However, it is important to note that data related to streaming subscriptions will not be affected by this change. Furthermore, the company has made it clear that it will not be selling any discs from its rental inventory, which consists of over 100,000 titles.
In expressing gratitude to its loyal DVD customers for their support, Netflix has emphasized its commitment to focusing on its streaming service. With over 200 million subscribers worldwide, the streaming platform offers a wide range of content, including original productions, licensed movies and shows, and interactive experiences.
