Mozilla, the non-profit developer, has announced plans to lay off approximately 60 employees, which accounts for around 5% of its workforce. This decision comes as Mozilla scales back on various development projects, as reported by TechCrunch.
According to the report, Mozilla has made cuts in several areas, including reducing the Online Footprint Scrubber feature within the Mozilla Monitor Plus service, which aims to clean up online footprints. Additionally, Mozilla has decided to halt the development of its virtual world service called Hubs, with plans to communicate an exit strategy to customers at a later date, although the specific timeline is yet to be determined.
The memo also mentions that Mozilla will be scaling down its Mozilla.social service, launched in partnership with Mastodon in 2023. Furthermore, it has been revealed that Mozilla intends to merge the Pocket, Content, and AI/ML teams into the Firefox organization, as learned from the IT House report.
A spokesperson, in a statement to Bloomberg, explained that Mozilla will prioritize its resources on products like Firefox Mobile, where significant growth opportunities exist, aiming to create better models for the industry.
