Business Insider reported that Microsoft has recently laid off over 1,000 employees, far exceeding its initial plan to lay off 10,000 employees. The layoffs primarily involve sales and customer service positions, with some sales teams being cut entirely. Microsoft's sales and customer service teams had previously numbered in the thousands, sparking widespread concern across the industry.

The layoffs at Microsoft are ongoing, with engineering project managers and the marketing department also facing the axe, although the specific layoff plan has not been announced yet. Microsoft has completely cancelled the position of customer solution manager, with some affected employees being transferred, but most have been laid off directly. Many of the affected managers were previously unaware of the layoffs, and they have criticized Microsoft's leadership team for their silence and blamed Judson Althoff, Microsoft's Chief Business Officer, for a lack of transparency.

Microsoft announced on January 18, 2023 that it will lay off 10,000 employees, or 5% of its workforce, by the end of March 2023. The layoffs will affect employees working on HoloLens, Microsoft Edge, marketing, and gaming.
