Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has introduced its latest virtual reality headset, the Meta Quest 3, during its annual Connect developer conference. The Quest 3 stands as the world's pioneering mixed reality headset, enabling users to seamlessly transition between immersive VR and MR modes, where virtual elements are superimposed onto the physical environment.
Enhancements of the Quest 3 include a 4K+ display with 30% higher resolution than its predecessor, the Quest 2. It is equipped with the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, doubling the graphics performance, as well as a 10-fold increase in full-color passthrough pixels, delivering a high-fidelity view of the real world. The headset also boasts a slimmer and more comfortable design, featuring a 40% thinner optical profile and improved weight distribution.
The Quest 3 is scheduled for release later this year in all countries where the Meta Quest is currently supported. It will be available at a starting price of $499.99 for the 125GB version and $649.99 for the 512GB version. Customers who pre-order the Quest 3 will gain exclusive access to items for Asgard's Wrath 2, a VR game that offers physics-based combat, dynamic worlds, and puzzles.
With the Quest 3, users will enjoy a wide range of VR and MR experiences, encompassing gaming, entertainment, work, and education. They will be able to engage in activities such as building virtual Lego structures, playing a virtual piano, and exploring alternate worlds by opening virtual doors within their physical surroundings. The headset also facilitates productivity and creativity in VR and MR, supporting applications like Word, Excel, and Meta AI—a novel artificial intelligence platform capable of generating images, text, and voice based on natural language inputs.
Meta has also revealed that Xbox Cloud Gaming will be accessible on the Quest 3 starting in December, offering access to over 100 games for a monthly subscription fee of $16.99. Additionally, Meta is actively developing a new VR social platform called Horizon Worlds, where users can construct and explore their own virtual spaces alongside others.
The Meta Quest 3 represents Meta's most advanced and ambitious headset to date, positioning itself as a strong competitor to Apple's upcoming Vision Pro—an augmented reality headset with an anticipated price tag of $3,500 set to launch next year. Through the Quest 3, Meta strives to materialize its vision of the metaverse—a shared virtual space enabling people to connect, create, and collaborate.
