Based on reports from various media sources, including the Economic Times of India and Bloomberg, it has been reported that India is considering the implementation of a five-year tax cut policy on the import of complete electric vehicles. The goal is to attract companies like Tesla to sell their vehicles in India and encourage local production in the future.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Indian government is in the process of formulating policies that would allow international automakers to import electric vehicles at preferential rates, on the condition that they commit to manufacturing the vehicles within India eventually. However, the specific details of the policy are still under consideration, and a final decision has not yet been made. The sources have chosen to remain anonymous due to the confidential nature of the negotiations.

In 2021, Tesla had requested a reduction in import tariffs on electric vehicles. The company urged India to lower the import duties from the existing 100% to 40%, although the actual reduction would depend on the import value of Tesla vehicles.

Furthermore, it is expected that Tesla CEO Elon Musk will meet with Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal later this week to discuss import-related matters and potential factory construction in India. Minister Goyal is currently in San Francisco attending ministerial meetings related to the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and APEC.

The discussions between Musk and Goyal will reportedly focus on Tesla's plans to establish a factory in India with a production value of $24,000 worth of electric vehicles. Additionally, Tesla aims to increase its procurement of components from India and expand the charging infrastructure nationwide.
