Windows On Arm devices have been exclusively equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips so far, thanks to an agreement between Qualcomm and Microsoft. However, with the expiration of this exclusivity agreement this year, several chip manufacturers are now eyeing the Windows On Arm device market.
Reports suggest that Nvidia, AMD, and MediaTek are actively planning to launch System on Chips (SoCs) based on the Arm architecture for the Windows platform. Samsung is also rumored to be developing corresponding Exynos chips, while Qualcomm is preparing to introduce the Snapdragon X Elite. As a result, a fierce competition is expected to unfold in this field, propelling Windows On Arm devices into a new stage.
In recent years, manufacturers like Lenovo, HP, and Dell have released Windows On Arm devices. However, due to the exclusive agreements in place, these devices could only be equipped with Qualcomm chips, resulting in limited options and higher pricing with average performance. Arm CEO Rene Haas believes that as the exclusivity agreement is set to expire later this year, other competitors will enter the market and challenge Qualcomm's dominance, leading to a shift in market share.
This development is also beneficial for Microsoft. The participation of more manufacturers in the Windows On Arm device market will help promote the platform. However, based on the current situation, Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips, manufactured using a 4nm process, have shown promising performance in preliminary tests.
Arm CEO Rene Haas predicts that consumers can expect to see a significant influx of new Windows On Arm devices hitting the market between late 2024 and early 2025.
